Tobacco Prevention Empowerment Evaluation Workshop (MISRGO):  April 11, 2013

“It is important to make sure your goals and activities match.  It is also good to have a back up plan.” These quotations came from Bruce Lockett, one of our tobacco prevention grantees – not from the evaluation team.

This was music to our ears.  He learned from his own mistakes.  He said: “we were doing lots of activities but the needle was not moving, so we had to sit down and figure out what we were doing wrong.” 

These are the kinds of insights and understandings shared at this MISRGO tobacco prevention empowerment evaluation workshop on April 11, 2013.   

Resources, Social Media & Graphs

A few additional workshop highlights included:

1.     sharing resources, such as The Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, County Health Rankings, and County Health Calculator

2.     demonstrating how to use social media, including Facebook, Google+, and Twitter

3.     making bar graphs to monitor progress

Closing the Gap

The focus of the workshop, however, was on closing the gap between current performance and end of the year goals.  We reviewed our use of dashboards; where we compare our actual performance with our benchmarks and goals.  Then we discussed what worked, what was not working, and what we needed to do next to reach our goals.  

Collaboration and Cooperation

This organically resulted in grantees helping each other with ideas based on their own successful experiences.  Ideas included: offering to assist with coalition building, linking colleagues with the Mexican consulate to reach the local Latino population, providing translation services, and helping implement the 40 days to freedom curriculum.  Instead of competing with each other, grantees helped each other accomplish their objectives; recognizing we either sink or swim together.


Linda facilitated the pictorial story board exercise.  It was an ice breaker at the beginning of the workshop and a closing exercise designed to reinforce our group identity. 

Grantees first drew a picture that conveyed the essence of their mission.  They used these pictures to explain what they do.  It forced them to crystallize what they do and think about the core elements of their programs.

Near the end of the workshop they were asked to draw pictures again.  However, this time they were asked to draw pictures of us as a group – what we represent as partners and part of a larger umbrella organization – MISRGO(a tobacco prevention initiative).  It reminded all of us of what we have in common and who we are as a group, rather than individual grantees.

Infographics and Data Visualization

It also set the stage for the final stage of the workshop:  infographics and data visualization.  We demonstrated how pictures can be used to convey a tremendous about of information about what we do.

We also highlighted data visualization examples in tobacco prevention.  Data visualization examples in tobacco prevention allow users to sort the data and come to their own conclusions.
